Service Description

For City of Arcades Week 2022 we are offering two special walking tours, in association with FOR Cardiff. Cardiff may be a young city but it still contains a darker edge, a hidden past and a mysterious historical underbelly. From the age of Norman invasion, through the days of the Tudor dynasty, Cardiff may have been a small town but it was a haven for pirates and capital punishment, and the threat of danger lurked around every corner. The rapid growth of Cardiff across the 19th century didn't remove that reputation. The success of the coal trade and the influence of the Bute family have given us the city we have today, but it came at a cost, as people lived in horrific conditions, disease and poverty were all around, and a hanging was never out of the question. This City of Arcade’s Week 2022, join this two hour walking tour around central Cardiff. we will discover the darker side of the city's life, and discuss the Welsh capital's history of squalor, executions, buccaneers, prisons and perhaps even some sea-monsters. Tours take place on Halloween evening, Monday 31 October at 6pm, and on Thursday, 3 November at 2pm.
